Bubba beats hyperthyroidism

Cute Bubba

Patient details

Name: Bubba (Enmebaragasi)
Age: 13 years
Breed: Domestic Shorthair
Gender: Male

Bubba is a charming ginger and white cat who came to us after his owner noticed he was hunting more, eating voraciously and losing weight, all subtle signs of hyperthyroidism.

Thanks to Stacey’s quick action and radioactive iodine (I-131) treatment at CSS, Bubba is now stable, content and back to his easygoing self.

Patient history

Early signs

Stacey first noticed something was wrong when her usually relaxed indoor cat began hunting. Bubba also started asking for food earlier in the day and more often than usual, and his weight had started to drop (by about 100 grams). She took him to her local vet, and luckily, the diagnosis was made before the condition became severe.

Diagnosis and treatment

Tests confirmed that Bubba’s thyroid hormone levels were high, explaining the changes Stacey had noticed at home. At CSS, Dr Rachel Korman examined him closely and also noticed some subtle hair loss and a small, mobile goitre on his right side. In November 2024, Bubba began I-131 treatment and spent time in our medical boarding facility to rest and recover. While he was with us, he put weight back on, his heart murmur was checked regularly, and he was kept comfortable with plenty of gentle care.

Outcome

After treatment, Bubba’s hunting stopped, his appetite returned to its usual standard, and his weight stabilised. He became more relaxed and content at home. Stacey said:

“It was a good experience, and I definitely recommend I-131. Even though others offer it, I recommend CSS. Everything from start to finish was just great, the daily updates, the care, the consultation with Rachel. She even pointed out things I hadn’t noticed at home, like some hair loss. I really appreciated how smoothly it all went.”

Dr Rachel added:

“Bubba arrived a little anxious but quickly settled into the environment. By the end of his stay, he’d gained weight and was eating well. He just looked really comfortable.”
