Our facility features state-of-the-art technology and a team of compassionate, experienced feline specialists who deliver comprehensive care, including close monitoring, pain management and nutritional support.

Radioactive iodine treatment in cats

About the treatment process

Radioactive iodine is widely regarded as the best treatment for cats of all ages due to its simplicity, effectiveness and safety. Untreated hyperthyroidism can lead to severe symptoms and potentially become fatal. Alternative treatment options, such as long-term use of oral medication, may carry a risk of benign thyroid adenomas progressing to malignant thyroid carcinoma.

The radioactive iodine treatment process begins with a thorough evaluation by our veterinarians, including physical exams, blood tests and possibly other diagnostics to determine the severity and rule out underlying conditions. Once we establish a treatment plan, your cat will be admitted to our facility for the procedure.

Radioactive Iodine post care treatment

Care post-treatment

After radioactive iodine treatment, cats excrete small amounts of radioactivity in their urine, stools and saliva for 2-4 weeks. To minimise human exposure, keep your cat indoors for two weeks and limit contact with their bodily fluids. Use a carrier for transport, handle them in well-ventilated areas, keep them off food surfaces, wash hands after touching them, and wear gloves when cleaning litter. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should stay away from the cat and its litter.

If you cannot keep your cat indoors during this period, Cat Specialist Services offers medical boarding for the two weeks post-treatment. Our boarding suites are purpose-built and spacious, ensuring your cat’s comfort and care. Please inform us when booking if you need post-treatment boarding to secure a place for your cat.

Patient Stories

Our commitment to feline health is best seen in the stories of the cats we’ve had the privilege of treating. These journeys highlight the dedication, expertise and compassion that drive us.

Each patient faced unique challenges, and it was our honour to offer high-quality care and help them regain strength and happiness. We value the deep bonds with cats and their owners, knowing the difference we make in their lives.

Skilled and compassionate cat nurses make all the difference
