Telehealth for cats

Since Covid, telehealth consultations have become standard practice in human medicine. Similarly, telehealth has proven to be a valuable tool in veterinary medicine, offering convenient access to expert advice regardless of geographical constraints.

Telehealth consultations are available through Cat Specialist Services. However, as governed by the Australian Veterinary Association, Telemedicine Practice 2020,  a cat must have been evaluated by their vet recently enough or often enough for a veterinarian to have personal knowledge of the cat’s condition to diagnose and prescribe a treatment. This is to avoid the risk of error in clinical judgment, e.g. giving incorrect information based on assumptions of the cat’s health status because they are not having a physical examination performed simultaneously.

For this reason, telehealth consultations cannot be performed where a CSS clinician has never examined the patient.  Telehealth consultations can be booked for CSS patients that a CSS clinician has examined within the last 12 months.

For remote and interstate cat owners

For cats and owners who live interstate or remotely, our feline specialists can provide an online telehealth consultation with an owner if the local veterinarian is present who has performed the physical examination and has the patient directly under their care. 

Before the Remote Advice Service, your veterinarian can provide all supporting documentation, e.g., history, videos and diagnostic imaging. We will then organise a time that works for both your veterinarian and yourself for a remote advice consultation.
