Out Patient Ultrasound

Out Patient Ultrasound for Cats

High-quality imaging for stable patients

We offer a Feline Outpatient Ultrasound service, providing high-quality ultrasound examinations in a cat-friendly environment with specialist advice for ongoing case management.

This service is ideal for stable patients and recheck examinations for conditions such as liver or kidney disease, mass evaluation, foreign body assessment and recurrent urinary tract infections.

Outpatient ultrasound is not available for echocardiography. Unstable patients should be scheduled through the appropriate feline medicine, surgery or emergency service.

For outpatient cases, the diagnostic imaging clinician will communicate directly with the referring veterinary clinic, not the cat owner.

About the service

Sedation can be administered at CSS and should be discussed with owners by the referring vet before the outpatient ultrasound. A signed consent form, including consent for sedation, will be requested from owners/staff before the service.

If a biopsy, fine needle aspiration or surgery is needed, this will be communicated to the referring vet, who can then discuss options with the owner. The sample can be sent back with the patient to the referring vet for submission, or the patient can be transferred to the relevant CSS service for ongoing management.

We will attempt to contact the referring veterinarian by phone after the ultrasound and provide a complete written report within two hours.

If the cat arrives in an unstable condition or requires diagnostics before the imaging procedure, the Emergency Service will evaluate the patient first, which will incur additional fees. We will inform the referring veterinarian as soon as possible.

Booking & additional information

For bookings, please fill out the form below with any history, blood work, radiographs, or supporting information as soon as possible, or send these details with the owner.

Cats should be fasted for at least 4 hours before the exam.  Do not restrict water.

We will strive to complete exams on time. However, emergency cases or delays may result in the exam occurring later in the day. Most cases take about one hour.

Clients or staff are welcome to drop off the cat for the day.

Please inform the owner that we will shave their cat. While we aim to minimise the shaved area, the size may vary depending on the region being examined and the specific condition.

Charges will be billed directly to the client unless other arrangements have been made.

Sedation Risks

While sedation can be beneficial, there are potential risks associated with its use, including but not limited to:

  • Adverse Reactions: Cats may very rarely have allergic reactions or unexpected responses to sedatives.
  • Respiratory Issues: Sedation can lead to respiratory depression, resulting in difficulty breathing.
  • Cardiovascular Effects: Sedation may affect heart rate and blood pressure, leading to potential cardiovascular complications.
  • Over-Sedation: Over-sedation can result in prolonged recovery times or complications.
  • Vomiting and Aspiration: Sedated cats may vomit, which poses a risk of aspiration into the lungs. Fasting your cat helps reduce this risk.
  • Prolonged Recovery: Some cats may take longer to recover from sedation than others.
  • Interaction with Medications: Sedatives may interact with other medications your cat is currently taking.

Our veterinarians will assess a patient’s history from the referring veterinarian and perform a physical examination. If our clinicians are concerned about the safety of sedation, they will contact the referring veterinarian to discuss an alternative plan.

Each cat is monitored closely throughout the procedure by our clinicians and highly trained feline nurses until they are ready to be discharged into their owner’s care.

Communication of Results

Once the ultrasound is complete, the procedure clinician will send the ultrasound report to the referring clinic. As this is an outpatient procedure, we do not discuss results with clients. The referring veterinarian remains in charge of the case.

If the client wants to speak with a CSS clinician or needs more information, please let them know they can book an initial consultation with the internal medicine team if a referral is needed. A full patient history will be required for referrals.

Invoicing

The procedure is payable to CSS by the owner at the time of discharge.

Please contact our reception for a cost estimate or complete the outpatient ultrasound request form.
