Radioactive Iodine Treatment

Give your cat the best treatment option

Radioactive iodine is widely considered the gold standard treatment for cats of any age with hyperthyroidism due to its simplicity, effectiveness and safety. Without treatment, hyperthyroidism can lead to severe symptoms and even become fatal.

At Cat Specialist Services, we have a dedicated facility for treating hyperthyroidism in cats using radioactive iodine (I-131). This highly effective treatment involves administering a single capsule, which is usually well-tolerated by cats and has a high success rate. Most cats return to normal thyroid levels within a few weeks of treatment.

How it works & ongoing care

The I-131 treatment process for hyperthyroid cats begins with a thorough evaluation, including a physical exam, blood work and any necessary diagnostic tests to assess their condition and rule out other health issues.

Once the treatment plan is established, your cat will be admitted for treatment and remain in isolation for 5-7 days while the radioactive iodine safely decays, in line with Queensland Health guidelines.

During this time, cats have their own unit in our world-class facility that is designed for their comfort and safety. Our team will closely monitor your cat’s condition and provide any necessary care.

After the isolation period, your cat can return home but must stay indoors for two more weeks. If needed, your cat can stay in our medical boarding suites, which offer natural sunlight, cozy sleeping areas and themed playrooms.

Follow-up care is crucial to ensure thyroid hormone levels remain stable and to monitor for any potential side effects. Our team will work with you to create a long-term care plan tailored to your cat’s needs.
