Poppi finds her feet again

Cat sitting at the bed

Patient details

Name: Poppi
Age: 11 years 10 months
Breed: Ragdoll (blue)
Gender: Female

Following surgery to remove a hairball obstruction, Poppi was referred to us at CSS as she had not bounced back as expected. Her original symptoms of inappetence, lethargy and unsteadiness on her feet were still present. With targeted investigations and supportive care, she slowly began to regain her strength and started eating again.

Patient history

Early signs

Poppi first presented to an emergency service with inappetence and weakness following the surgery to remove the hairball foreign body. At that point, she hadn’t eaten in four days and was being syringe-fed at home. When she arrived at CSS, she was quiet, dehydrated and showing mild hindlimb weakness.

A PEG tube was placed to help keep her nourished while our team looked into why her recovery was taking longer than expected.

Diagnosis and treatment

Under the care of Dr Rachel Korman and the feline medicine team, Poppi had a series of tests, including an abdominal ultrasound, chest X-rays and an echocardiogram. These showed a small amount of fluid around her lungs and signs that her body was holding extra fluid, likely as a result of intravenous fluids in a cat with reduced reserve.

Her treatment was adjusted accordingly. She received pain relief, anti-emetics, appetite stimulants and nutritional support via feeding tube, alongside close monitoring of her cardiovascular status.

Outcome

We’re pleased to report that Poppi responded splendidly to her tailored treatment plan. Her appetite slowly returned, she regained her strength, and she was able to go home once she was comfortable and eating on her own again. During her stay at CSS, she was gentle and sensitive, and she handled everything with the kind of calm, quiet bravery that made her a joy to care for.
