Angel’s UTI and kidney care

Patient details

Name: Angel
Age: Elderly
Breed: Domestic cat
Gender: Female (spayed)

Angel, a sweet senior kitty with chronic kidney disease, recently visited our clinic after showing signs of a urinary tract infection (UTI). Under the care of Dr Rachel, she underwent diagnostic testing to confirm the infection and receive appropriate treatment.

Patient history

Recognising UTI Symptoms in Cats
UTIs can be difficult to detect in cats, especially in those with underlying conditions like chronic kidney disease. Some key signs to watch for include:

  • Straining to urinate or frequent trips to the litter box
  • Blood in the urine (hematuria)
  • Increased vocalisation when urinating
  • Strong-smelling urine
  • Changes in drinking or eating habits
  • Lethargy or hiding behaviour

Angel’s case highlights the importance of early detection and treatment. Her diagnostic workup included urinalysis and microscopy, which revealed a significant bacterial presence. An ultrasound of her bladder further helped assess the extent of the infection and guide treatment decisions.

Treatment and Outcome
Angel was prescribed antibiotics to combat the infection, along with supportive care tailored to her kidney condition. Her dedicated mum closely monitored her at home, ensuring she made a full recovery.
