Han’s Hip Fracture Surgery

Han inside a ward

Patient details

Name: Han
Age: 9 months old
Breed: Domestic Shorthair
Gender: Male

Han presented to us after limping on his hind leg for two weeks following an accident at home. After an X-ray revealed a fractured growth plate in his hip, Han underwent surgery to repair the injury.

Thanks to the skilled care of his surgical team, Han is now back on his feet and is showcasing the incredible resilience of young cats!

Patient history

Initial presentation

Han had been limping for two weeks when he was brought to CSS. Medical management, including pain relief and rest, had not improved his symptoms, so further investigation was required.

Diagnostics and surgery

Dr Jason, a specialist surgeon at VSS, performed X-rays that showed a fractured growth plate in Han’s hip.

Growth plate fractures can affect the skeletal development of young cats, often requiring surgical repair to prevent future bone malformations. Dr Jason performed surgery using fluoroscopy, a minimally invasive technique that uses live X-rays to guide the placement of internal pins in Han’s femur.

Outcome

Han stayed with us overnight after his surgery and was up and walking normally within hours of the procedure. He was discharged the following day and continues to recover well at home.
