JJ & the Lily – a close call

Mischievous JJ

Patient details

Name: JJ
Age: 2 years old
Breed: Domestic Shorthair
Gender: Male

Mischievous JJ had a close call when he ingested part of a lily—an extremely toxic plant for cats. Thanks to the quick actions of his owner, Sophie, a VSS vet nurse, JJ was brought to the clinic immediately, preventing any serious damage to his kidneys.

This story is a valuable reminder of the dangers lilies pose to our feline friends. We are thrilled that JJ made a full recovery thanks to the swift response and care he received.

Patient history

Initial incident

Sophie found JJ chewing on a lily stalk, unaware another household member had brought the toxic plant into the home. Seeing pollen all over JJ’s face, Sophie knew immediate action was required. She quickly washed off the pollen and rushed him to VSS Underwood for treatment.

Treatment at CSS

When JJ arrived at the clinic, his kidney values were tested, and a baseline ultrasound was performed. While his initial test results showed normal kidney function, treatment began immediately to prevent the development of acute kidney injury (AKI). JJ stayed at CSS for four days, receiving intravenous fluid therapy, daily blood and urine tests, and an activated charcoal oral solution to absorb any remaining toxins.

Outcome

JJ’s kidney values slightly increased during treatment but stayed within the normal range. By the end of his four-day hospital stay, his values started to return to baseline. After being discharged, JJ continued to visit the clinic for follow-up blood tests over the next month, confirming he had made a full recovery with no long-term kidney damage.
