The road to recovery for Kuro

This is Kuro Chen playing

Patient details

Name: Kuro
Age: 17 years
Breed: Domestic Short Hair
Gender: Male

Kuro is a calm and dignified older cat who faced a challenging case of hyperthyroidism and early kidney changes.

With a comprehensive and careful treatment plan and ongoing monitoring, Kuro came through his I-131 therapy well and is now more comfortable and stable at home. He’s a reminder that with the right support, even complicated conditions can be managed well.

Patient history

Early signs

Kuro had been living with hyperthyroidism since 2021, which was managed with carbimazole tablets. However, his condition became harder to control as time went on. Despite increasing doses, his thyroid hormone levels continued to fluctuate, and he began losing weight and muscle. Kuro’s bloodwork also revealed mild chronic kidney disease and a heart murmur, which added to the complexity of his care.

Diagnosis and treatment

At CSS, Kuro’s care plan focused on balancing his thyroid disease with his early kidney changes and heart murmur. He was stabilised medically before proceeding with radioactive iodine (I-131) treatment in January 2025. During his hospital stay, Kuro was monitored closely, and he remained calm throughout his time with us. Steadily, he gained weight and showed a good appetite.

Dr Rachel said:

“He really was the perfect patient, very tolerant and very settled. Despite being an older cat with several health issues, he responded beautifully to the care.”

Outcome

Kuro’s thyroid hormone levels returned to normal, his kidney values remained stable, and his weight improved slightly over the weeks following discharge. At home, he became more interactive and comfortable, which is a pretty clear sign of improved wellbeing.

“Seeing him brighter, eating well, and being more engaged with his owner after treatment was incredibly rewarding,” Dr Rachel said. “Cases like his show how much these cats can improve when their thyroid disease is finally under control.”
